HARD 17

In the game of Blackjack, the term 'hard 17' usually refers to what the dealer must do on every hand. Dealers within casinos, unlike the players, must follow certain rules. And of course it is good to know the rules they follow. In this case the number 17 refers to the number of points that the dealer must hit until reaching it. The word 'hard' would imply that the dealer must hit a 'soft 17'. A ' hard 17' is one in which any aces in the hand count as only 1 point and not 11 points. A soft 17 would be a hand that totaled 17 points only because an ace in the hand counted as 11 points.

For the most part, it is an advantage to the dealer to hit soft 17 hands but to stop at hard 17 point hands or at soft 18 hands. And that is now what the majority of casinos seem to do.

This one's pretty simple. If you have a 17, there are a really low percentage of cards that won't make you bust. Aces, twos, threes, and fours will help your hand, but all of the other cards will hurt you.

Those cards make up 16 cards in the deck. Which means there are 36 other cards in the deck which will make you lost instantly.

Blackjack

And that's for a total of 17. The ratio gets worse when you look at a hard 18 or 19.

And of course, a total of 21 is a winning hand.
